Sundar Pichai warns Google employees that more layoffs are coming

After Google cut more than 1,000 jobs across multiple divisions and 100 at YouTube last week, CEO Sundar Pichai sent a memo to employees warning of more changes to be expected this year. More layoffs.

Pichai’s memo said the company will have to make “tough choices” to achieve its ambitious goals, The Verge reported.

The CEO said this year’s layoffs would not match last year’s layoffs, when the company laid off 12,000 employees, or 6% of its workforce.

“These roles are not being cut like they were last year, nor will they impact every team. But I know it’s hard to see colleagues and teams being impacted,” he said in an email to employees.

“Many of these changes have already been announced but will need to be announced in advance, some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions as needed throughout the year and some roles may be impacted.”

Google’s layoffs last week affected multiple teams including hardware, engineering, advertising and services, laying off more than 1,000 people. then, The company also comfirmed TechCrunch has learned that Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman are leaving the organization.

On Wednesday, Google laid off 100 YouTube employees as part of a restructuring.

“To better position us to seize these opportunities, in the second half of 2023, many of our teams made changes to become more efficient, work better, and realign resources to our most important product priorities. Some teams are continuing Making such organizational changes will include cutting some positions globally,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement regarding YouTube’s layoffs.
