Lyft expands program to pair female and non-binary riders with drivers

Lyft is expanding its Women+ Connect program to many new cities. The program initially launched in September at a limited number of locations, but is now being expanded.

Women+ Connect does exactly what its name suggests. It connects female and non-binary riders with drivers of similar identities and vice versa. This is an opt-in feature designed to enhance safety during rides and attract women and non-binary people to become drivers on the platform. Lyft says nearly half of its riders are women, but women make up only 23% of its drivers.

Here’s how it works: You turn the feature on and it connects you to the right driver based on the gender you entered when you signed up. For drivers, it uses the gender associated with the license on file. If there are no female or non-binary drivers looking for a fare, you’ll still be matched with a male driver so you’re not standing outside in the cold.

The program is only available in a handful of cities, including Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco. This is clearly a huge success for Lyft, with the company noting that 2.4 million riders have used Women+ Connect since its launch in September and more than half of its qualified drivers have started using the service. It also said that this feature has the highest satisfaction rate among all driver tools launched by the company.

Women+ Connect is now available in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Dallas, Washington, D.C., and more. Check the app to see if the feature is available where you live.

It’s the latest tool adopted by ride-sharing platforms to improve safety and reduce incidents of sexual assault and other violence. Uber recently made it easier for riders and drivers to contact 911 and on-site security personnel. The platform has also begun allowing passengers and drivers to record audio during their journeys.
