Apple cuts more than 700 jobs after shutting down car, display projects

According to the latest WARN report released by the California Employment Development Department (EDD), more than 700 Apple employees have recently lost their jobs. Most of those laid off worked at Apple’s Santa Clara offices, with 371 coming from locations that primarily handled the company’s now-defunct electric car program. Under California law, companies must submit reports to the EDD for each location affected by a layoff under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) program.

Apple is experiencing layoffs at eight Santa Clara locations, including its main automotive office, although one location was responsible for its internal MicroLED display project, which was reportedly canceled in March due to cost and technical difficulties. The company wants to make its own screens for iPhones, Macs and its smartwatches, but that’s obviously not going to happen anytime soon.
