Rivian surprises with launch of R3 and R3X electric SUVs

The company said that R3 and R3X will be launched “shortly” after R2 “to ensure the smooth launch and rapid improvement of R2.” This is based on “lessons learned” from the company’s simultaneous launch of the R1T, R1S and EDV trucks. Following their launch in North America, the vehicles will also be introduced to international markets, but a specific timetable has not yet been announced.

Like the R2, the R3 and R3X will use Rivian’s new 4695 cylindrical cells, which are 15mm taller than Tesla’s 4680 cells. It will have a native version of Tesla’s NACS charging port built directly into the vehicle. Rivian says DC fast charging will charge the R3 from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.

The company also promises a more powerful computer and a sensor suite that includes 11 cameras and five radars. The R3 will have “significantly enhanced autonomous capabilities,” although the company didn’t specify what level of automation it’s targeting.

One of the features Scaringe highlighted during the event was that the rear door windows can be raised to provide additional storage space, especially for long items. (He calls it “flip glass,” but it’s unclear if that’s a nickname or a more official name.)
